Preserving Genius: The Remodel of the Historic Sterling Residence in Mill Valley by John Marsh Davis

A Mid-Century Masterpiece Restored in Marin County

Tucked away in the hills of Marin, the Sterling Residence stands as an architectural triumph—and perhaps the purest expression of legendary organic architect John Marsh Davis’ genius. Originally commissioned and built in 1969, this iconic estate represents the pinnacle of Mid-Century Modern design in Northern California.

When Michael Heacock Architects was approached by the home’s new owners—a young family relocating from Southern California—the mission was clear: update this residential treasure for modern family living while respecting the integrity of its original design.

For an architect, remodeling the definitive work of a master is a rare honor. It demands the lightest of touches, deep historic empathy, and a commitment to rare craftsmanship.

First Impressions: Walking Into an Architectural Chapel

The first time Michael Heacock stepped into the great hall of the Sterling Residence, his jaw hit the floor. The home does not merely feel like a residence; it possesses the soaring, spiritual quality of a beautifully hand crafted chapel. The home's sacred geometry is governed by a strict, two-axis layout that ensures flawless symmetry across all four quadrants:

  • The Primary Axis: A breathtaking 16-foot-tall central great hall that anchors the entire home.

  • The Secondary Axis: A cross axis running directly through the living room and dining room, balancing the home’s proportions.

  • The Clerestory Windows: Piercing the upper roofline, continuous bands of clerestory windows flood the central hall with a shifting cathedral-like wash of natural light throughout the day.

The Transformation: From Haunted House to Evening Drama

While the home was a sun-drenched sanctuary by day, the nighttime story was different. The original 1969 lighting scheme was incredibly minimal. For a family with two young children, the vast, shadowy spaces of the great hall felt less like a mid-century masterpiece and more like an imposing haunted house once the sun went down.

The challenge was to introduce light without disturbing the exposed trusses and elegant framing. Working hand in hand with the new owner, Michael Heacock designed a sophisticated, completely invisible lighting solution by seamlessly concealing state-of-the-art LED strips within the main hall framing. The home underwent a radical nighttime transformation. Today, at the touch of a button, the shadows disappear, replaced by a warm, dramatic glow that accentuates the timber framing and turns the evening experience into a theatrical celebration of space.

Modern Updates with a Whisper: Kitchen, Baths, and Craftsmanship

Beyond the transformative lighting, the young family required functional updates to transition the home into the 21st century. Michael Heacock Architects designed thoughtful, modern kitchen and bathroom updates tailored to contemporary luxury standards. Every new finish, fixture, and material was selected to complement—never compete with—John Marsh Davis’ original redwood palette.

Bringing this delicate design to life required an expert hand. We are profoundly grateful to our collaborator of 30 years, Rick Sandquist, the master contractor who elegantly constructed the renovations with the precision of a fine cabinetmaker.
