Mill Valley Lumber Yard by Michael Heacock Architects

Michael Heacock Architects was instrumental in the historic 2018 transformation of the Mill Valley Lumber Yard, a landmark dating back to 1892. With our philosophy of remodeling existing buildings to preserve neighborhood character and minimize embodied energy, we repurposed 10 original structures totaling approximately 17,500 square feet. This adaptive reuse strategy significantly reduced the project's carbon footprint by avoiding the high emissions associated with new construction.

Our strategic site planning converted the former industrial site, where many of us previously bought construction materials, into a pedestrian-friendly village-like community space. By integrating micro-retail spaces, art studios, and popular venues like Flour Craft Bakery and Watershed restaurant, the project successfully revitalized a piece of local history into a vibrant outdoor gathering spot for the town.

The vision and perseverance of Matt and Jan Mathews, dedicated owners and a beloved local family, are the only owners we’ve met in 30 years who could have pulled off this transformation so successfully.

In addition to the overall site transformation, we worked on several tenant improvements that bring the Lumber Yard to life. This includes crafting the vibrant space for Maker’s Market, which showcases local artisans, and designing the specialized interiors for Mon Rêve Chocolate Art Studio and BOL Superfood Cafe. By tailoring these unique environments within the historic character, we’ve helped cultivate a diverse retail community that reinforces the Lumber Yard’s role as Mill Valley's premier outdoor social hub.
