Molokai Residence

Maui County, Hawaii

Modern custom home designed by Marin based architect, Michael Heacock, for a remote site in Hawaii.

The Sound of Silence: A Highway Engineer’s “Off Grid” Sanctuary on Moloka‘i

It started with a phone call. Michael answered, and on the other end of the line was a man who spent his entire career immersed in the relentless, roaring environment of Southern California’s freeways. As a highway engineer, his days were defined by concrete, traffic, and decibels.

But he had a vision for the next chapter. He explained to Michael that he was retiring in two years and had a plan: twenty acres of sacred land on Moloka‘i—one of the quietest, most untouched places on Earth. He wanted Michael Heacock Architects to design his "off grid” island dream home with a panoramic ocean view looking toward O‘ahu.

Designed for a Craftsman

We often work with Owner Builders. In this case the client was a craftsman and a boat builder. He needed a talented, experienced team to design a home he could build himself. His plan was to move to the remote island and hire a small crew of local laborers, leading the build with his own two hands. Michael Heacock Architects designed the modern island home with the builder in mind. Every unique detail—from the custom roof trusses to the elegant stair railings—was intentionally designed to leverage his craftsmanship and a scarcity of large equipment.

Logistical Masterclass: From the Pacific Northwest to Amazon

Building on a remote island site in Maui County presents immense logistical hurdles. Success required thinking outside the box—and inside the shipping container.

  • The Backward Container: We sourced the wood framing directly from a mill in the Pacific Northwest. To streamline construction on-site, we coordinated with the mill to pack the shipping container backwards. When the container arrived on Moloka‘i, the client pulled the pieces out in the chronological order he needed to build, saving countless hours of sorting on the job site while keeping unused materials secure and dry.

  • High Architecture, Low Shipping: Because Moloka‘i is so isolated, freight costs can be astronomical. In a stroke of practical necessity, numerous finishes and materials were selected due to their availability on Amazon to take advantage of free shipping to the island!

A Rare Honor

Today, this off grid house stands as a case study in modern island architecture and remote project management. It transitions seamlessly from the raw, quiet landscape of Moloka‘i to a refined, light-filled sanctuary looking out over the Pacific toward O’ahu, providing 100% of it’s own electricity.

For Michael Heacock Architects, seeing this home come to life was a profound delight and a rare honor. To collaborate with a client who possessed the grit to build his own sanctuary, and to successfully deliver a highly designed custom home in such a beautifully remote location gives meaning to our work.
