The Richard deLone Special Housing Project Pilot Home

At Michael Heacock Architects, we believe in the power of design—architecture that is an authentic expression of our spirit and the land. This philosophy found its most meaningful application in our work with Prader-Willi of California to design and build their first pilot home in Marin County.

A Foundation of Compassion

The project is deeply tied to the vision of Austin deLone and his wife, Leslie. Austin is a legendary figure in the Marin music scene, a soulful keyboardist and "Greenwich Village" pioneer whose career has spanned decades of collaborations with artists like Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt. When their son, Richard, was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS)—a rare genetic disorder characterized by an insatiable physical hunger—the deLones transformed their personal challenge into a community mission.

Together, they founded The Richard deLone Special Housing Project, an organization dedicated to creating small group homes specifically tailored to the unique needs of those living with PWS.

Designing for Dignity and Security

Designing for Prader-Willi Syndrome requires a specialized architectural vocabulary that balances security needs with the warmth of a true home. Because PWS causes a lack of satiety, "food security" is a critical design driver. Our approach focused on:

  • Integrated Security: Discreetly incorporating lock-controlled kitchens and pantries behind attractive, non-punitive cabinetry to reduce resident anxiety.

  • Sensory & Structural Harmony: Utilizing calming color palettes, sound insulation, and natural lighting to assist with emotional regulation and reduce sensory overload.

  • Open Sightlines: Implementing layouts that allow for discreet monitoring by staff and caregivers without infringing on the residents' sense of independence.

  • Wellness Oriented Spaces: Creating wide, safe walking paths and access to recreational areas to encourage the physical activity necessary to manage the metabolic challenges of the syndrome.

An Ongoing Mission

This pilot home serves as more than just a residence; it is a blueprint for future housing. While Austin deLone passed away in early 2025, his legacy continues through the ongoing work of the foundation he and Leslie built. Michael Heacock Architects remains honored to support this mission to build beautiful, functional spaces that care for the most vulnerable members of our community.
