Mill Valley Architect Michael Heacock at his Marin office

Michael Heacock, ARchitect

For 30 years Michael Heacock has pushed the boundaries of architectural design, blending his passion for organic and modern architecture with an unwavering commitment to ecological performance. His journey from design/build to green architect was deeply shaped by his time with the legendary California architect Sim Van Der Ryn, a true pioneer of sustainability. Under Van der Ryn’s mentorship, Michael refined his ability to design living buildings that exist in harmony with their natural surroundings. This rich ecological foundation is balanced by his admiration for iconic masters of form, drawing inspiration from the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, the sweeping modernism of John Lautner, and the nature-integrated sensibilities of Mickey Muennig in Big Sur.

From his studio inside the historic Mill Valley Lumber Yard, a defining historic landmark he instrumentally helped transform, Michael’s team delivers regionally responsive, high-performance architecture. His practice spans innovative commercial and mixed use developments, pioneering schools, recreational facilites and custom residences, including 20 LEED Certified projects. From net-zero eco-homes, multifamily and private schools to adaptive reuse offices, his  diverse and prominent work stretches across Marin, Sonoma, Napa, San Mateo and Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hawaii.

At the center of his practice is a singular guiding philosophy: "Build Something Meaningful." Michael’s team operates on the core belief that beautifully designed buildings can profoundly improve our lives while minimizing their ecological footprint. For Michael, design is never just about aesthetics — it is a purposeful art rooted in the conviction that buildings should stir our spirits and harmonize with the environment. To achieve this, he fosters deep collaborations with craftspeople, artists, and sculptors, working alongside visionaries like Yorgen Quent of Artstruct to seamlessly infuse “funktional design” with fine art. From bold, highly expressive forms to meticulously handcrafted details, every project is a pursuit of originality and intention.

When he isn’t shaping the built environment, Michael channels that same relentless drive, focus and connection to nature into cycling and swimming, highlighted by his recent completion of the English Channel, the Catalina Channel, and the circumnavigation of Manhattan, also known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
