Designing for Dignity and Independence
At Michael Heacock Architects, we believe that architecture should empower its occupants. Our renovation of the Marin Ventures facility in San Rafael is a testament to this philosophy. Marin Ventures is a vital community engagement day program dedicated to fostering independence and personal growth for 75 adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The goal of this commercial renovation was to transform an existing commercial building into a vibrant, high-functioning environment that supports a diverse curriculum of creative arts, health, fitness, and independent living skills.
Collaborative Leadership
Bringing this vision to life required a seamless partnership between the design team and the organization’s leadership. Working closely with Executive Director Jami Davis, our firm focused on creating a space that honors the unique needs of every participant. Jami’s deep commitment to the participants and their families provided the guiding light for the project, ensuring the final design would facilitate deep community integration and meaningful expression.
A Purpose-Built Environment
The renovation involved a comprehensive overhaul of the interior to accommodate specialized programming, including:
Creative Arts Studios: Dedicated spaces for painting, ceramics, and sculpture, designed with accessibility at the forefront to ensure all participants—including those with severe mobility issues—can express themselves artistically.
Music & Recording Rooms: Sound-optimized environments for instruction and creative performance.
The Patio: An essential outdoor expansion providing a serene space for social interaction and fresh air, seamlessly connected to the interior program areas.
Inclusive Flow: The layout was reimagined to ensure 75 adults can move safely and intuitively through the building, promoting a sense of autonomy and calm.
