Child Development Lab Berea Ecovillage, Berea Kentucky
The Berea Child Development Lab (CDL) provides preschool and K-3 education for the students, faculty, and staff of Berea College. In keeping with the mission of the Environmental Studies Department and Berea College's policy of social responsibility, the Child Development Lab was designed as an educational and environmental center.
The buiding is constructed of SIP panels, and minimizes wood use. Finishes are all non-toxic and highly durable. The placement of windows and fixtures suits the needs of children and unique spaces are created for special activities. The second floor viewing platforms allow young educators to learn without disrupting classroom environment.
The CDL also functions as a community center with conference spaces and a large deck overlooking the Ecovillage. Located directly across from the play yard is the Ecovillage and Living Machine, which processes all waste water on site, including that of the CDL.
