The Bruce Trades Atrium at Berea College is the ultimate urban infill project. An existing dark alley between two historic brick structures was converted into a useful indoor learning and community environment. The open interior brings natural light into the lower atrium space, and operable clerestory windows allow for natural ventilation. A new lobby area invites people off the street and resolves access issues for the two adjacent buildings. The lower floor incorporates a new kitchen and lounge area, while the mezzanine connects the uppor floors of both historic sturctures. The Bruce Trades Artrium is the perfect study hall during finals, and a great open venue for social and campus events.
