MICHAEL HEACOCK ARCHITECTS

Ecological Architecture | Green Interiors + LEED Consulting

LEED "Coaching"
There are five basic categories of LEED consultants:
1. Architects
2. Mechanical engineers
3. Commissioning agents
4. Energy consultants
5. Unqualified individuals

While there are benefits to the first four types of consultants performing LEED administration, we believe that those with architectural backgrounds are most qualified for all the categories of LEED credits. Architects tend be generalists, and are trained to work across the multiple disciplines required for LEED certification.

We are sometimes approached by architects, who want to perform the LEED administration and coordination on a project. Occassionally it is because they do not want a third party introduced to their client. Other times the architect wants to be perceived as the "green expert." Most architects find out that LEED administration and coordination requires a specialist, who they either pay to train in house, or realize that it is easier to hire a LEED consultant.

Occassionally we work with architects and developers in the capacity of a LEED "Coach." This is an "on call" service we provide on an hourly basis. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this service, but we do provide it for architects and projects we like.

If you are studying for the LEED exam, please go to third party webites, such as the
Green Building Certification Institute and USGBC.org.
